HOPA Food Distribution Process in Kandahar Province

The Humanitarian Organization for the People of Afghanistan (HOPA), in strategic partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (UN-WFP), successfully implemented a multi-sectoral humanitarian assistance program across five districts of Kandahar Province—Spin Boldak, Shorabak, Arghistan, Shawalikot, and Myanashin—during Feb-26 and Mar-26. As part of this intervention, HOPA conducted comprehensive SCOPE registration (WFP Digitalized System for Registration) activities in Feb-26, reaching a total of 5,560 households, ensuring accurate identification and targeting of vulnerable families in need of assistance.

Following the registration process, HOPA distributed essential food rations to the registered households for Feb-26 and Mar-26, which included 50 kg wheat, 5 kg salt, 6 kg pulses, and 3 kg vegetable oil, contributing to improved household food security and supporting basic nutritional needs. In addition to general food assistance, targeted nutritional support was provided to vulnerable groups, where Lipid-based Nutrient Supplements (LNS) were distributed at 1.5 kg per child for children aged 6–23 months, aiming to prevent malnutrition and support healthy growth during critical early childhood stages. Furthermore, Wheat Soya Blend (WSB) was provided at 3 kg per woman for pregnant and breastfeeding women, helping to improve maternal nutrition and overall health outcomes.

In parallel with the distribution activities, HOPA integrated community awareness and education through the Integrated Health, Nutrition, and Immunization Program (IHNIP). These sessions focused on promoting key messages related to child and maternal health, proper nutrition practices, and the importance of immunization, thereby strengthening community knowledge and encouraging positive behavioral changes. This integrated approach ensured that beneficiaries not only received life-saving assistance but also gained essential knowledge to improve their long-term health and well-being.

Through this coordinated effort, HOPA, with the support of UN-WFP, continues to address urgent humanitarian needs while contributing to the resilience and well-being of vulnerable populations across Kandahar Province.
